Curtis Allen and Peter Thompson score two each in Linfield's 4-0 win over Portadown at Windsor Park

Linfield moved to within two points of Carling Premiership leaders Glentoran as they hammered a poor Portadown side at Windsor Park.

Curtis Allen struck the Blues ahead on eight minutes and he doubled the advantage 14 minutes later after being set up by Mark McAllister.

More unselfish work by McAllister enabled Peter Thompson to fire Linfield's third goal on 45 minutes.

Thompson completed the scoring for the Blues three minutes from time.

Linfield dominated from the start with Mark McAllister looking set to notch the opening, before a crucial intervention by Ross Redman.

However, Allen struck the Blues ahead on eight minutes and Michael Gault was close to doubling the advantage a minute later as David Miskelly produced a smart save.

With the Ports defence looking ponderous, Allen hit the second goal of the afternoon on 22 minutes after unselfish work by McAllister.

And the game was up for the Ports on the stroke of half-time as the superb McAllister set up Northern Ireland striker Thompson for his third goal of the season, as he had time and space to turn and fire past Miskelly.

Portadown barely registered a threat in the second half with Keith O'Hara's header over the top their best attempt.

Allen went close to completing his hat-trick but was denied by a superb Miskelly save.

Linfield appeared content that the job was done but Thompson added a fourth three minutes from time.

With Glentoran losing at Seaview, the Blues are now only two points off the pace and they have a game in hand on the leaders.
