Darren Murray hits Newry City's late winner in Friday's Carling Premiership clash against Glenavon at the Showgrounds

Darren Murray's 80th-minute goal helped Newry City edge out Glenavon in Friday's Carling Premiership clash at the Showgrounds.

Glenavon keeper Andy Plummer saved from Andy Graham early on and Francis Murphy missed a Newry chance on 36 minutes.

Graham fired Newry ahead in first-half injury-time after Gerard Rowe had pounced on a poor Glenavon clearance.

Mark Miskimmin levelled for Glenavon on 47 and then hit the Newry woodwork on 58 before Murray's superb winner.

Murray lashed home his strike from 18 yards for what turned out to be a spectacular winner.

After Graham's opener, Miskimmin half-volleyed Glenavon's equaliser two minutes after the break from an acute angle following a ball over the top from Brendan Shannon.

Miskimmin hit the Newry woodwork on 58 and Stuart King lashed the rebound wide.

Glenavon keeper Plummer was adjudged to have handled outside his own box on the hour but he stayed on the pitch and Ross Black's resultant free-kick went wide.

However, Murray was on target for Newry with his superb winner 10 minutes from time.

Newry stay ninth in the table despite their win, with Glenavon two points ahead of them in sixth.
