Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has undergone surgery for an abdominal complaint and the operation has been described as "successful".

A Football Association of Ireland statement said that a "straightforward surgical procedure" had been performed at Dublin's Mater Hospital.

"He is now in recovery and will be returned to the ward in the next few hours," added the statement.

Trapattoni is expected to remain in hospital until at least the weekend.

The 71-year-old Italian was laid low by vomiting and abdominal pain and was taken to the Mater Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Tests revealed that the discomfort was as a result of minor scar tissue from previous surgery and the operation was aimed at relieving his abdominal pain.

Trapattoni will miss Wednesday night's friendly against Argentina, with assistant Marco Tardelli taking charge.

The Irish manager arrived in Dublin on Sunday suffering with vomiting, which he believed had been caused by food poisoning after eating shellfish in Italy.

After being taken to hospital, Trapattoni underwent a series of blood and urine tests, as well as x-rays and an ECG.

The FAI said on Wednesday morning that Trapattoni's progress throughout the night had been "slightly behind expectations," resulting in further tests being conducted.

The prognosis was that the continual vomiting was aggravating the scar tissue, so causing the abdominal pains which necessitated the surgery later in the day.

Trapattoni will be confined to watching Ireland's friendly against Argentina on television from his hospital bed.

Assistant manager Tardelli will take charge of the game, the Republic's first at their new home, the £350million, 50,000-seater Aviva Stadium.
