Glentoran 1-3 Linfield

Linfield storm into the semi-finals of the Irish Cup by beating Glentoran 3-1 in the quarter-final at the Oval

Glentoran's form post-Alan McDonald didn't get any better as two Elliott Morris errors helped Linfield win the JJB Sports Irish Cup quarter-final.

The Glens, with Scott Young in charge, started well but Robbie Garrett put the Blues ahead on 14 minutes with a shot which went through Morris' grasp.

Morris dropped a cross on 40 minutes and Philip Lowry accepted the gift.

Jamie Mulgrew ran unchallenged to hit Linfield's third on 50 before Keith Gillespie's reply on 63.

If anything the Glens looked the better side in the opening 14 minutes with Gillespie's trickery causing headaches for young Linfield full-back Aaron Burns.

A miskick by Burns also let in the Northern Ireland international before the danger was averted.

As Linfield improved, Curtis Allen was presented with a chance but Dean Fitzgerald reacted smartly to make a block.

However, the Blues did take the lead on 14 minutes and while Garrett did get full purchase on his low shot from the edge of the box, Morris should have been able to deal with it.

Gillespie was presented with an immediate chance to level after beating the offside trap but the veteran hesitated and gave impressive Kris Lindsay time to clear.

Morris' day went from bad to worse five minutes before the break as he dropped an Aaron Burns cross which allowed Lowry to hammer to the net.

Gary Hamilton should have got Glentoran back into the game in first-half injury-time as he headed a glorious chance over the crossbar.

Any realistic chance of a Glentoran fightback was ended when Mulgrew struck Linfield's third on 50 minutes after being allowed to stride unchallenged into the Glens' penalty area.

Gillespie pulled a goal back on 62 after nodding Jason Hill's deep cross to the net at the back post.

Another Glentoran goal would have had strained Linfield nerves and the chances did come late on.

Gillespie blasted over with five minutes left and Colin Nixon then volleyed a glorious chance wide after a misdirected Garrett back-header.
