Newry City defender Emmett Friars asks for transfer

Emmet Friars is likely to be linked with a move to Derry City

Newry City defender Emmet Friars has been placed on the transfer list at his own request.

Club general manager Derek MacEil said that the Derryman had asked for a move for "travel and personal reasons".

"He's been a great servant to the club but he just feels that the travelling from Derry has become a difficulty at this stage of his life," said MacEil.

Friars' contract with the Showgrounds outfit is scheduled to run until the end of next season.

The defender is likely to be linked with a possible return to his hometown outfit Derry City although there has yet to be any contact from the Candystripes.

Derry are in the process of assembling a largely Maiden City-based squad for their League of Ireland First Division challenge this year and a deal may suit both parties.

However, Newry official MacEil cautioned that the Showgrounds club would "not be letting him go for absolutely nothing".

"At the same time, we won't be looking to make life difficult for him so hopefully we will be able to come up with something which suits him and ourselves.

"He's been a very fine player for us and a real fans' favourite."

Newry's scheduled game with Lisburn Distillery on Saturday was postponed because of the cold snap and the club's re-arranged match on Tuesday with Dungannon at the Showgrounds is also likely to be in major doubt.
