Derry players facing big wage cut

Derry City's financial problems have led to a planned 75 per cent wage cut for players this month.

Candystripes captain Peter Hutton has discussed the concerns of the playing squad with club officials.

"We are having discussions regarding players receiving 25 per cent of this month's wages, plus the imminent arrival of wage cuts," said Hutton.

"These last few days have been a distressing time as football is, for most, the sole means of income."

City chairman Pat McDaid admitted last month that the Brandywell club was struggling financially and he didn't rule out wage cuts.

"The biggest expenditure in Derry City would be on the playing side so obviously it would be impossible to make reductions without impacting on that in some shape or form," he said.

Derry have lost two of their main sponsors, with the resulting loss of revenue likely to run into tens of thousands of pounds.

The club is trying to raise £50,000 by asking 50 companies and individuals to donate £1,000 each.

The players have vowed to do their best to help the club through the current crisis.

"Players are not immune from the pressures of daily life such as providing for a family, mortgage/rent & car repayments etc, so it's a worrying time for all involved," added Hutton.

"The players also acknowledge and value the efforts of all those working tirelessly behind the scences in helping to ensure we have a competitive team on the field of play.

"Consequently we too are aware of our own responsibilities within the current situation.

"The players of Derry City FC are fully united in our commitment to finishing the season strongly and we recognise European qualification is essential if our club wishes to move forward through this difficult period.

"In a week that can have a significant bearing upon us achieving this goal, the players would like to appeal to all our supporters to demonstrate their support for our club by attending the upcoming games and being as vociferous and passionate as possible."
