Drogheda United midfielder Gavin Whelan, son of former Liverpool star Ronnie, has joined Irish League club Lisburn Distillery on a two-year deal.

Whelan, who also played for Bray Wanderers in the League of Ireland, had recently been released by Drogheda.

"Gavin has everything we are looking for. It is a fantastic piece of business for us," Distillery manager Jimmy Brown told the News Letter.

Whelan, 25, has been signed in time to play in the Europa League.

The Whites will discover their European opponents on Monday, with the first leg match scheduled for Thursday, 2 July.

Goalkeeper Philip Matthews is not available for the Europa fixtures so Brown has signed former Ballymena and Newry keeper Paul Murphy for a month.
