Veteran Carr announces retirement

Stephen Carr
Carr made 44 appearances for the Republic of Ireland

Former Republic of Ireland international defender Stephen Carr has retired from football following his release by Newcastle United in June.

Carr, 32, had been without a club since leaving St James' Park having made more than 100 appearances in his four seasons with the Magpies.

The Dublin-born full-back began his career with Tottenham and racked up 270 appearances for the club.

He was capped 44 times, making his debut against Sweden in 1999.

Carr moved to Newcastle from Spurs for 2m in August 2004, but serious knee and foot injuries limited his appearances in his last few seasons on Tyneside.

And despite the reported interest of several Premier League clubs, Carr has been forced to call time on his career.
