Glens trounce Blues at Windsor

Glentoran trounced Belfast rivals Linfield 4-1 in Monday night's Setanta Sports Cup game at Windsor Park.

Grant Gardiner scored a penalty in the third minute after a rash challenge on Darren Boyce by Stephen Douglas.

Robert Garrett fired home the equaliser from 12 yards out on seven minutes but Boyce netted from close range after 27.

Michael Halliday made it 3-1 with a cool finish into the bottom of the net on 53 and then curled a left-foot shot into the bottom of the net after 68.

Gardiner was booked for over-celebrating after his early opener before Mark Miskimmin set up Blues new boy Garrett to rifle the ball right-footed off the underside of the bar and past goalkeeper Elliott Morris.

Boyce capitalised on poor defending to score on 27 and soon after Linfield were appealing for a penalty after a challenge on Paul McAreavey.

Kyle Neill then squandered a good opportunity for the Glens.

Halliday collected a through ball and saw off a couple of defenders before slotting the ball home for his first and then produced a good finish for his second.

Morris produced fine saves to deny McAreavey and Douglas late in the game but it was a distinctly below-par performance from David Jeffrey's side as the Glens deserved their margin of victory.

Linfield and Derry now have seven points in the group, with St Patrick's Athletic and Glentoran on five.

Derry and St Pat's have two games still to play, with both Belfast sides having one fixture remaining.
