Glentoran v Bangor now on Sunday

The Oval
The Oval pitch was declared waterlogged on Saturday

The JJB Sports Premiership game between Glentoran and Bangor is to become the first Irish League football fixture to be played on a Sunday.

Both clubs agreed the move after the match was unable to be played on Saturday because of a waterlogged pitch at the Oval due to the heavy rainfall.

An amendment was made to Irish Football Association rules last year year to allow Sunday games if both clubs agree.

The game will kick-off at 1500 BST on Sunday 7 September.

The pitch at the East Belfast venue was declared unplayable following a pitch inspection on Saturday morning.

Speaking to the BBC, Bangor secretary Jim Steed said his club was "very glad to be part of such a historic day".

"There was no way the game could go ahead on Saturday and Bangor are happy enough to get the game played and out of the way.

"Both clubs already have a backlog of fixtures and the Bangor directors and Marty Quinn are happy to play the game on Sunday.

"I received a phonecall from Alison Brownlee of Glentoran at about 1130 BST on Saturday, saying that the two managers had been in touch with a view to playing the game on Sunday, weather permitting.

"I think it could be a great day for Irish League football and I think there will be a good crowd," he added.
