Glenavon have appointed former player Stephen McBride as the successor to Terry Cochrane at Mourneview Park.

McBride was part of Cochrane's backroom team along with Alan Fraser, who has been named as Director of Football.

Former Northern Ireland international McBride was a crowd favourite with the Lurgan Blues while Fraser managed the team in the early 1990s.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge - we've big ambitions and it's going to be a rollercoaster ride," said McBride.

"It's big honour for me with it being my hometown club and it's a priviledge to be one of the few ex-players to go on to be part of the management set-up."

The 44-year-old former Linfield forward was offered the job prior to Cochrane's appointment but turned down the opportunity.

"I didn't think the time was right for me but I've been learning since then and the time is right now.

"We are a big club and we want to get back to where we were when I was player and Alan was the manager.

"It's going to take time and there will be highs and lows but it's important to get the feelgood factor back at the club.

"We're starting to build for next season and we aim to strengthen all areas of the team."

McBride also confirmed an interest in bringing Drogheda United striker Tony Grant back to the club.

Cochrane left Glenavon "by mutual consent" last week just five months after taking the job.

He was a surprise appointment back in January and he came into the post vowing to introduce change at the club.

However, the Lurgan Blues continued to struggle in the Carnegie Premier League and they ended up 12th in the 16-team table.
