Platt is new Bannsiders manager

New Coleraine manager David Platt
David Platt is aiming for league progress at the Showgrounds

Coleraine have named former player David Platt as their new manager.

The 33-year-old, who is a nephew of former Showgrounds boss Jim Platt, was assistant to Marty Quinn for the last two years.

Platt was a goalkeeper for clubs including Limavady United, Finn Harps and Derry City before being forced to quit the game through injury at 24.

"It's a dream job for me - I've got ambitious plans and we've got to focus on the league," he said.

Platt also had a spell as reserve team manager with the Bannsiders.

"We have plenty of experienced players but also many young ones and it's important to strengthen the squad now we are in the Setanta Cup.

"People may say I've no experience of management at this level but I've learnt a lot in eight years at Coleraine and as a player I worked under many good managers including Felix Healy, Kenny Shiels and Kevin Mahon.

"While I have ambitious plans I have to take small steps.

"We must now concentrate on making progress in the league - getting to the Irish Cup final gives the wrong impression.

"There is plenty of work to be done to get into the top four or five."

Quinn left Coleraine last month to join Bangor after eight years in charge.
