Crusaders midfielder Darren Lockhart has decided to retire from football at the age of 34.

Lockhart informed his team-mates of his decision after Saturday's 3-0 defeat by Linfield at Seaview, having told manager Stephen Baxter a month ago.

The player won two league championships and three Irish Cup medals during a distinguished spell at Glentoran.

"The rigours of Irish League football were taking their toll and I can't go on for ever," he told the News Letter.

Lockhart scored his final goal for the Crues in a 1-0 win over north Belfast neighbours Cliftonville last week.
