Jeffrey hails 500 man Ferguson

David Jeffrey was delighted with Ferguson and his team's comeback

Linfield boss David Jeffrey praised Glenn Ferguson after the striker passed the 500 goal mark with a double in the 3-2 CIS Cup final win over Crusaders.

"He is a legend and has made a tremendous contribution to this club," said the jubilant Jeffrey.

"His first goal was a superb header and the second was just sheer enthusiasm, desire and bravery.

"Crusaders were excellent and deservedly went ahead but over the whole match we derserved to win."

He added: "Sometimes pretty football doesn't win you things - you have to battle, fight, have desire, the appetite to win and the fear of failure.

"My players have a desire in them which is fantastic and they battled in the second half when we had to go for broke and played three up front."

Ferguson was delighted to finally reach the 500 milestone and help his team win the trophy.

"I've waited a long time for it but it's like buses - you wait ages for one and then two or three come along together," he said.

"I've always believed in my own ability and we've still been winning games without me scoring.

"It's just great to win the game. The Crues made it tough and with David Rainey they have a predator who is always going to score goals for them."

Crusaders manager Stephen Baxter gave an upbeat assessment after losing out to Linfield's late show.

"I'm absolutely gutted but that's why Linfield are league champions," he said.

"We went asleep for two sucker punches and we've lost the final.

"But we've played exceptionally well and I'm immensely proud of my players."
