Cliftonville manager Eddie Patterson believes midfielder Conor Downey could end up playing in England or Scotland, despite an approach from Linfield.
Conor Downey has been in superb form for Cliftonville
The Irish League champions have written to the north Belfast club expressing their interest in signing Downey.
Cliftonville want Downey to agree a new contract but Patterson is aware he could lose his sought-after player.
"The lad wants full-time football and, if he does go, hopefully it is across the water," said the Reds manager.
"We have had an official approach from Linfield and we appreciate the fact that they went through the proper channels.
"We are having talks with Conor about a new contract.
"But if wants to go full-time we will do our utmost to secure that for him."
Cliftonville revealed that Glentoran have also made an official approach for Downey and Portadown are also believed to have joined the race for the player.
