Killian Brennan has been ruled out of Derry City's Uefa Cup first qualifying round second leg against IFK Gothenburg at the Brandywell on Thursday.

Derry City claimed a shock 1-0 win the away leg but they have been hit by a worrying list of injuries ahead of the return clash.

Midfielder Pat McCourt is ruled out while captain Peter Hutton is also a major doubt because of a knee problem.

However, manager Stephen Kenny will be able to call on Ciaran Martyn.

The midfielder has now fully recovered from a shoulder injury.

Kenny has said that his team "won't make the mistake" of trying to sit back against the Swedish outfit.

Sean Hargan's late header grabbed the Eircom League side a famous 1-0 victory at the Ullevi Stadium a fortnight ago but Kenny is convinced any attempt to cling onto that advantage would cost his side dear.

Kenny said: "It is important that we believe in ourselves, show no fear and continually strive to cause Gothenburg problems.

"We respect the fact they are a formidable opponent but we certainly will not go out with an inferiority complex.

Gothenburg, sure to be fired up for the Brandywell contest after their first leg embarrassment, warmed up for Thursday's game with a morale-boosting 2-1 friendly win over West Ham at the weekend.

Despite Derry's advantage from the first leg, the Swedes will be confident of progressing to the next round.

Derry's only previous victory over two legs in Europe came in 1965 against Norwegian outfit FK Lyn.

The Candystripes lost the European Cup first leg in Norway 5-3 before hammering Lyn 5-1 at the Brandywell.

City were the first Irish club to make progress in European competition.
