MATCH SHORTS

  • Ireland were comfortable 2-0 winners when they last met Russia. That was in a friendly at Lansdowne Road in February. Coach Mick McCarthy is expecting a tougher tussle this time around.
  • Many pundits believe these two sides are the strongest in Euro 2004 Qualifying Group Ten, which also includes Switzerland, Georgia and Albania.
  • Russia won their qualifying group to reach the World Cup Finals. But an opening match win over Tunisia was followed by defeats against Japan and Belgium and elimination from the tournament.
  • McCarthy's side, without the 'sent home' skipper Roy Keane, drew 1-1 with Cameroon and Germany and finished runners-up in Group Two after a 3-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. A late, late penalty took the second round match against Spain into extra time, but the Irish then missed out in a penalty shoot-out.
  • Reports that this game would be postponed because of heavy smog in the area of the Lokomotiv ground in Moscow, venue for the match, were dismissed by Alexander Tukmanov, executive director of the Russian Football Union. The smog was caused by fires in Eastern Moscow.
