England player ratings
Marks out of 10 for the England players in their Euro 2004 qualifier against Liechtenstein at Old Trafford.

David James: Rarely called upon and only had one save to make. Rushed from his goal when he had to and his distribution was good.

Gary Neville: Looked more comfortable than against Macedonia and got in some decent crosses. But still looks shaky when someone runs at him.

Wayne Bridge: Played almost as a left-winger rather than left-back. Got forward well but was let down by his crossing and was also booked.

John Terry: Produced a couple of good tackles but not really tested. Recovered well from a slip near the end that could have been costly.

Matthew Upson: Hardly had a kick and was part of an England defence which sat too deep in the first half. Still to prove himself at this level.

David Beckham: A busy start when he hit the bar and was involved in England's best chances. Had a hand in the second goal and was then replaced.

Steven Gerrard: Not his usual dominant self and gave the ball away a lot. But showed his class with a pinpoint cross and a neat lay-off for the two goals.

Frank Lampard: Another below-par display. Gave the ball away too often, although he did improve in the second half and kept going until the end.

Wayne Rooney: A sensational performance from the 17-year-old. He probed and prompted and more than deserved his goal with a crisp right-foot finish.

Michael Owen: Poacher's finish for the first after an unusually subdued first half when he missed an open goal. Was unlucky not to add a couple more.

James Beattie: A quiet start, but Beattie improved and hit the bar just before the break. Worked hard but will be disappointed not to have scored.

Substitutes

Owen Hargreaves (replaced David Beckham): Scurried up and down the right flank in familiar style. Nearly scored with a thumping drive from 20 yards.

Phil Neville (replaced Steven Gerrard): Played just in front of the back four and made sure England were protected. Kept possession well.

Joe Cole (replaced Wayne Rooney): Showed flashes of his class and his close control was superb. Went close with a couple of shots; a decent cameo.
