Marks out of 10 for the England players in their Euro 2004 qualifier against Slovakia.
David James: After his heroics against Turkey he showed his susceptibility when he allowed Slovakia to score from a long-range free-kick.
Danny Mills: Poor going forward and uncertain at the back, the Leeds defender was hauled off before half-time.
Ashley Cole: Twice in the first half he was nowhere to be seen as Slovakia counter-attacked. Also offered very little going forward.
Gareth Southgate: Vice-captain for the night in front of his own fans, the experienced Middlesbrough defender went to sleep to give Robert Vittek a good chance in the first half.
Matthew Upson: His partnership with Southgate looked a little suspect in the opening half when Slovakia attacked, but they were untroubled after the interval.
Phil Neville: On this evidence the experiment of Neville in midfield may not be repeated. Looked more at home when he returned to right-back.
Steven Gerrard: Despite some wayward shooting, he was England's most effective midfielder, capping a fine all-round performance by creating the second goal and almost scoring himself in the dying stages.
Frank Lampard: Was denied a goal by an offside flag and looked dangerous in the second half after a first-half display where he struggled to offer any width from the left of the diamond.
Paul Scholes: Rarely looked like bringing his barren scoring run at international level to an end. Plenty of tidy touches in the centre of the park but England need to see him further forward.
Michael Owen: The stand-in skipper marked his 50th cap by making and scoring the equaliser from the spot, heading the winner and was only denied a hat-trick by the bar.
Wayne Rooney: Had the weight of the nation's expectations on his young shoulders but got little support from his midfield. Apart from a couple of juicy tackles that left Slovakian defenders grounded, he was disappointingly anonymous.
Substitutes
Owen Hargreaves (replaced Danny Mills): The bundle of energy was not at his best but England looked much more comfortable with him on the right side.
Darius Vassell (replaced Wayne Rooney): Could have scored with his first touch and again his livewire pace off the bench seemed to lift England.
