Marks out of 10 for the England players following the Euro 2004 qualifier against Turkey.
David James: Saved well from Yildiray Basturk and twice from Nihat Kahveci, though his decision-making at times left the heart in the mouth.
Gary Neville: Solid defensively and started to get forward into some dangerous positions during the game's later stages.
Wayne Bridge: Had few problems containing Okan Buruk. Played a crucial part in the goal with his cross from the left. Got better as the game progressed.
Rio Ferdinand: Rarely troubled by Ilhan Mansiz. Timed his run to perfection to force a superb save from Rustu Recber to play a big part in Vassell's goal.
Sol Campbell: His usual commanding self, containing the dangerous Nihat Kahveci. His partnership with Ferdinand gets better with every game.
David Beckham: Resembled a bull in a china shop at times and his delivery was wasteful from good crossing opportunities, though redeemed himself with the penalty.
Nicky Butt: Just as he had done against Argentina during the World Cup, filled the holding role in midfield with some distinction.
Paul Scholes: A subdued performance from one of England's most consistent peformers. Rarely got hold of the ball and when he did struggled to link the play.
Steven Gerrard: Marooned in England's graveyard position on the left, but grew in stature and provided plenty of impetus with some surging runs.
Michael Owen: Had two chances, but missed his kick and then was denied by Rustu's alertness. Departed early after an Alpay Ozalan tackle.
Wayne Rooney: England's best player until the last 20 minutes - encapsulated by his mazy run and sublime reverse pass to Owen just before the break.
Substitutes
Darius Vassell (for Michael Owen): Immediately made a nuisance of himself with some darting runs. Twice denied by a superb saves from Rustu before grabbing the first goal.
Kieron Dyer (for Wayne Rooney): Won the penalty, though not on long enough to gain a rating.
