Came to prominence during an impressive series of displays for England in the 2002 World Cup, and has become a reliable option for Sven-Goran Eriksson.
Returned to the England starting line-up against Turkey and enjoyed a hugely impressive display at the base of the diamond formation.
May not be a regular at Manchester United and at one stage looked to be moving elsewhere in the Premiership, but his experience and solidity make him a serious option for Eriksson.
