England captain David Beckham
Beckham scored a wonderful equaliser for England
Our verdict on England's players:

David Seaman

Completely at fault for Macedonia's first goal - reminiscent of his blunder against Brazil at the World Cup. Never really regained his composure.

Gary Neville

Steady game throughout, although failed to combine with Beckham to any great effect on the right flank. Made some timely challenges.

Sol Campbell

Failed to clear danger for Macedonia's second and his distribution from the back was poor. Not his usual commanding self.

Jonathan Woodgate

Looked more assured alongside Campbell and dealt with aerial balls confidently. Brought ball out of defence impressively.

Ashley Cole

Never really got going in the first half, but did slightly better after the interval. Drove forward with purpose but to no real effect.

David Beckham

Led by example to haul England out of the mire, scoring the first equaliser with a deft chip. Had a hand in the second, but needlessly booked.

Wayne Bridge

Handed chance to impress in front of home fans. But failed to make any real impact on the match and was withdrawn early in the second half.

Steven Gerrard

Guilty of some sloppy passing. But made amends with a spectacular volley to pull England level before being stretchered off injured.

Paul Scholes

Looked far more comfortable in his central midfield role. Instrumental in England's opener. Probed well but made fewer late runs into area.

Alan Smith

Lively and full of running. Proved a useful link between midfield and attack. But let himself down by being sent off for second bookable offence.

Michael Owen

Again forced to feed off scraps. Never let his head go down despite the distinct lack of service. Had goal wrongly ruled out for offside.

Substitutes:

Nicky Butt
Came on for Gerrard and slotted in well alongside Scholes. Provided the telling pass for Owen to put the ball in the net.

Darius Vassell
Took over from Bridge and his pace initially caused Macedonia problems. Almost grabbed a dramatic winner but fired wide.
