Clockwatch: England 1-1 Portugal
Latest action from England's friendly against Portugal at Villa Park.

90 mins (+3): Portugal, who have been the better side in the second half and fully deserved their equaliser, finish the stronger. England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson will have been pleased with his side's first-half performance but disappointed with the way they wilted after the break.

90 mins: Newcastle midfielder Hugo Viano, who has impressed as a second-half substitute for Portugal, strikes a 20-yard free-kick over the England crossbar.

85 mins: Gareth Southgate makes a crucial block to deny Portugal the possibility of a second goal.

79 mins: Substitute Rodriguez Costinha heads an equaliser from a corner for the visitors. Owen Hargreaves will be disappointed not to have cut the ball out at the near post but Portugal fully deserve their goal because of their second-half pressure.

78 mins: Jorge Silva replaces Fernando Meira for Portugal.

76 mins: Luis Boa-Morte wastefully crosses behind the goal when in an excellent position on the left wing.

69 mins: Gareth Southgate glances a header wide from an excellent Danny Murphy free-kick.

65 mins: Southampton's Wayne Bridge, on as a half-time substitute, tackles Capucho before brilliantly evading the Portuguese winger and clearing.

64 mins: England keeper David James invites trouble with a woefully short goal-kick and is lucky that his defence clears.

62 mins: England bring on Trevor Sinclair, Danny Murphy and Joe Cole for Lee Bowyer, Nicky Butt and Michael Owen.

60 mins: Wayne Bridge clears a threatening cross from Fulham's Luis Boa-Morte, who is on as a substitute for Portugal.

57 mins: Portugal midfielder Petit fires over the crossbar with a 25-yard free-kick. The second half has so far been a far scrappier affair than the first.

48 mins: Unmarked Nuno Gomes, on as a second-half substitute for Portugal, hits the post with a powerful header.

48 mins: David James makes a finger-tip save to deny Nuno Gomes.

1702 BST: England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson makes four changes for the start of the second-half, bringing on Jonathon Woodgate, David Dunn, Owen Hargreaves and Wayne Bridge for Rio Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard, Danny Mills and Ashley Cole. Portugal make nine substitutions, with Fernando Meira and Petit their only players to stay on from the first half.

45 mins (+1): England go in ahead at half-time thanks to a splendid goal from Alan Smith.

40 mins: Alan Smith dives to head home a right-wing cross from his Leeds team-mate Lee Bowyer. The goal is 21-year-old Smith's first in international football.

38 mins: Danny Mills brilliantly dispossesses Simao inside the England area. The match is very finely poised.

30 mins: Rio Ferdinand finds himself as England's last line of defence and makes a crucial tackle on Pauleta.

24 mins: Sergio Conceicao beats Gareth Southgate with a dip of the shoulder before curling a shot narrowly wide of the far post.

23 mins: Rui Jorge heads a good cross high over the crossbar for Portugal.

17 mins: Alan Smith holds the ball up well in the Portugal area and passes wide to Emile Heskey. The burly Liverpool striker picks out Nicky Butt, who takes the pass in his stride but cannot muster a clean strike.

13 mins: Danny Mills whips in an excellent cross from the right which Emile Heskey can only manage to head wide, despite getting above his marker with ease.

10 mins: David James turns a clever flick from Fernando Meira round the post to give Portugal a corner.

7 mins: Nicky Butt picks up a lay-off from Alan Smith and shoots powerfully from 20 yards. Vitor Baia gets down well to make a low save.

5 mins: Nicky Butt hits a ball over the top of the Portugal defence for Michael Owen to run onto, but Vitor Baia reacts quickly to thwart the England captain.

2 mins: Alan Smith, making his first start for England, breaks down the right and crosses low into the area. The ball breaks to his Leeds team-mate Lee Bowyer, whose first shot in international shot is a tame one that is easily gathered by Vitor Baia.

1600: Portugal kick off in front of a partisan English crowd.

1554 BST: The two sides - England led by Michael Owen and Portugal by Fernando Couto - come out onto the pitch at Villa Park.
