NI in line for friendly with USA

IFA president Raymond Kennedy
Kennedy believes the game could be played in the USA or England

Northern Ireland are set to take on the USA in a friendly as England's Group C opponents build up for the World Cup finals in South Africa.

The Americans have asked the Irish FA for the game, which would take place in March or May.

IFA president Raymond Kennedy said it has a number of offers for friendlies but the USA was the front-runner.

He added that the match would likely to be staged away from Windsor Park to make it "financially feasible."

South Africa bound Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay are among the countries that have requested a friendly with Nigel Worthington's side.

England open their World Cup bid against the USA in Rustenburg on 12 June.

"We could have played them last month but chose Serbia instead because it suited our circumstances better at the the time," Kennedy told the Sunday Life.

"But now with the USA in the same group as England they become an even greater attraction.

"We'll probably need to play them away to make it financially feasible because, unlike the Republic who are going to host Brazil at Croke Park, we don't have the same capacity.

"Much will depend on US demands - America is a vast country and whether they would insist on us going over there to get the right climatic conditions remains to be seen.

"An alternative might be to consider playing the game at a venue in England which would give the English fans a chance to weigh up the strength of their World Cup opponents."
