Burley not under threat, says SFA

Scotland manager George Burley
The SFA say Burley is not being pressured to quit as manager

By Jim Spence

Scotland manager George Burley is not under pressure to quit following the defeat by Wales, the Scottish FA say.

Despite Saturday's bruising 3-0 friendly reverse in Cardiff, BBC Scotland has been told that Burley will remain as manager.

A senior SFA source told BBC Scotland: "There are no plans to have a meeting about George's position.

"We are disappointed at the result and we will have to reflect on it, but George is not under any pressure."

Scotland have not beaten Wales since 1984 and that never looked like changing after the hosts established a three-goal lead after 36 minutes at the Cardiff City Stadium.

"You're looking when you play games to get some positives, but there were none today," Burley said after the defeat.

The manager said he thought Scotland were lively for the first 20 minutes "but then we fell apart like a pack of cards".

There are no plans for George to walk away

"I spoke to the players and I can't explain it," he said.

"I'm looking for them as a team to work hard and stick together. I felt they were going in the right direction after the last few games, but we've certainly got to look at it again.

"There were a lot of disappointing displays. As a team, we were too easy to beat and that was the case today. It was a shocking performance."

The travelling Tartan Army were unhappy at the performance of the Scotland team with many booing and others leaving the game early.

However, Burley has the backing of his bosses at Hampden.

Asked whether the manager may opt to walk away, the senior SFA source said: "There are no plans for George to walk away. We have no plans to have a meeting."

Burley, whose contract runs until 2012, succeeded Alex McLeish as Scotland manager in January 2008.
