Smith rules out Scotland return

Rangers manager Walter Smith has ruled himself out of a return to manage Scotland at any point in the future, despite being linked with the job.

In 2004 Smith picked up the pieces of Scotland's 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign, replacing Berti Vogts, but returned to Rangers in January 2007.

"When you've been in a job, it takes something special for you to come back and do it a second time," said Smith.

"I did it at Rangers, and I wouldn't see myself doing it again."

Smith's comments arrived following the news from the Scottish Football Association that George Burley would be continuing in his role as Scotland manager.

Burley's position had been under threat following the failure of Scotland to qualify for next year's World Cup Finals in South Africa.

Smith welcomed the decision to keep Burley in place and insisted Scotland will be better off maintaining continuity.

"I don't think Scotland can be in a position where every time they fail to qualify, we get rid of the manager," Smith told BBC Scotland.

"Having done the job myself, I know it's not an easy transition to make - making the move from day-to-day working to the involvement of the national team.

"I'm sure the experience that George has gained over the last campaign would stand him in good stead going into the next one.

"So, from my own point of view, I would feel that was a good decision. I'm sure it will be a benefit to Scotland."

The contracts of Smith and his Ibrox assistants Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowall expire in January 2010.

The trio led Rangers to the final of the Uefa Cup final in 2008 and last season they celebrated winning the Scottish Premier League title.

With Sir David Murray seeking a buyer for the Glasgow club, there has been a degree of uncertainty over the future of the Rangers management team.

"It's not a problem, the contractual situation, either to me or to the club," said Smith.

"It's just one of those things. My contract finishes in January and we'll need to see what happens then."
