Scots set sights too high - Moyes

Moyes says Scotland should not expect to qualify for major tournaments

Everton boss David Moyes says Scotland need to reassess their expectation levels after a sixth successive failed qualification campaign.

Scotland last played in a major tournament at the 1998 World Cup, and Moyes says the latest failure should not provoke too much introspection.

"Scotland don't have any right to qualify," said Moyes.

"We aren't producing the amount of good players like in the past, so we can't expect similar results as in the past."

Scotland missed out on a play-off spot for next summer's World Cup in South Africa, after finishing third in qualifying Group 9.

National team manager George Burley's side took just 10 points from a possible 24 as they came behind pool winners Netherlands, and Norway.

"I've heard people saying it's terrible they did not qualify in front of Norway, Iceland and Macedonia," added the former Celtic and Dunfermline defender.

"But why should we? We have to compete with everyone else and we are a team that has not qualified for any tournament for quite a while now.

"Why would Scotland think they have a right to qualify in front of the other sides in their group? I don't think they have that right."

Burley has won just three of his 12 matches in charge and he is to meet his Scottish FA bosses next week to discuss his future.

But the Toffees boss added his voice to those who believe Burley should not resign or be sacked.

"George Burley has got the best he could out of the players he had," said Moyes.

"This is not the time for the manager to go."
