Jakub Blaszczykowski of Poland in action against Northern Ireland's Jonny Evans
Northern Ireland captain Aaron Hughes said he is "a little bit disappointed" after Poland scored a 79th minute goal to secure a 1-1 draw in Chorzow.
"I thought we played very well in the first half but they came back at us in the second half and made us work very hard," said Hughes after the game.
"Maybe some people will say they deserved a point as they dominated possession during the second period.
"But they only created a few clearcut chances and we had a few of our own."
Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington bemoaned the loss of striker Kyle Lafferty early in the second half.
Hughes disappointed but satisfied
"We missed Kyle's presence up front when he went off in the second half and he is a real handful when he plays like that," said Worthington.
"It is a fantastic result for us but we are all disappointed it is not three points.
"To come to a country like this, who have a very good team, we put our bodies on the line.
"Everyone to a man was fantastic and we have got a very good point.
"We knew we would be performing in front of a passionate crowd and with a crowd like that, it's a great game to be involved in - the colour, the noise adds to the occasion.
In the first half they did exactly as I wanted and you are expecting to come under pressure in the second half
"I told the players before the game, whatever you do, go out and enjoy it.
"In the first half they did exactly as I wanted and you are expecting to come under pressure in the second half.
"But the way they stood up to the challenge is part of our make-up and it was important that they did."
Defender Stephen Craigan said Northern Ireland had shown how they are "growing as a team".
"We knew we would have to defend for long periods in the second half but we showed our composure and we are still alive and kicking with two games to go and still have a great chance of qualifying," said the Motherwell defender.
