Wales U21 4-1 Hungary U21

Wales congratulate Ched Evans after his first goal
Evans now has 11 goals from 10 games at Under-21 level

A first-half brace from Ched Evans helped Wales to a big win over previous Uefa Under-21 Championship Group Three leaders Hungary at the Racecourse.

Neil Taylor's cross set up new captain Shaun MacDonald who headed the opener, only for Zsolt Korcsmar to scramble an immediate equaliser from a corner.

Evans turned in Christian Ribeiro's low cross from the narrowest of angles then blasted powerfully past Peter Gulacsi.

Andy King closed a poor second 45 with a fierce goal from the edge of the box.

Wales overtake Hungary at the top of the group, Brian Flynn's team having previously drawn away at Luxembourg before beating them at home.

Bosnia-Herzegovina and pool favourites Italy have yet to start their campaign, Wales' next game against the Azzurri in Swansea next month.

Flynn will be keen to hold on to Evans for the rest of the tournament, the new Sheffield United striker having dropped down from the senior squad.

Evans' tally at U21 level now stands at 11 goals from 10 appearances.

Wales manager Brian Flynn:
"There were a lot of good individual performances out there and I'd be hard pushed to pick a man of the match.

"Individually they each have their strengths and collectively they are a very good, very tight group and we are fortunate that we have three or four who have a lot of experience of under-21 football.

"In tournaments like this it is important to win your home games. That's what we aim to do and then we'll hope to nick a result or two on our travels.

"But it was difficult because the game has come so early in the season and one or two of the lads looked a bit tired towards the end.

"[Evans has] had a disrupted pre-season, not only with the hassle surrounding his move but also because of a niggling back injury which has restricted his training.

"So we have got to be pleased with his goals and it proves that this team is set up to score goals.

"If defenders go past the halfway line, we tell them to go all the way and that's what they do."
