Caldwell makes case for defence

Scotland international Gary Caldwell admits he would be happier playing in defence in the World Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands and Iceland.

The Celtic defender was deployed in midfield in the Co-operative Insurance Cup final win over Rangers, but said it was not his favoured position.

"I feel most comfortable at centre-back," said 27-year-old Caldwell.

"It's what I'm used to, but if someone tells you what to do, you've just got to go and do it."

Scotland face Group 9 leaders Netherlands on 28 March in Amsterdam, before hosting Iceland at Hampden four days later.

And the former Hibs defender said he would prefer to play in his natural position.

It's another big game against one of the top nations in the world and to go and get a win would be another huge achievement

"I've always said if wherever the manager puts me, I have to do the best job that I can," said Caldwell.

"I feel most comfortable at centre-back, it's what I'm used to, but if someone tells you what to do, you've just got to go and do it."

Scotland are currently in second place in the group and Caldwell says the squad need to emulate their performances against France in the Euro 2006 qualifiers if they are to take anything against the Dutch.

"It's another big game against one of the top nations in the world and to go and get a win would be another huge achievement, but it's one I think we're capable of," said Caldwell.

"We're going to have to get everything right on the night, maybe ride our luck at times and get the breaks when we need them.

"It's going to take the same as the two France games.

"We've proved over the years that we're a better team now than we were in the past and we can get a positive result.

"If we win the two games coming up, then it would put pressure on the Netherlands to say we're still in the hunt. But realistically four points would be a massive achievement and try to secure second place."
