Netherlands drop Celtic striker

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink
The Dutch striker has struggled for form this season

The Netherlands have dropped Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink for the World Cup qualifiers against Scotland and Macedonia.

The 30-year-old is missing from the 23-man squad for the double-header after being included in head coach Bert van Marwijk's provisional squad.

Vennegoor of Hesselink has scored just twice this season and has struggled for form at club level.

The Netherlands, who top Group 9, face second-placed Scotland on 28 March.

Vennegoor of Hesselink and Orlando Engelaar miss out as the Netherlands look to move a step closer to securing qualification for the 2010 World Cup.

The Dutch striker signed for Celtic from PSV Eindhoven in 2006 for £3.4m.

But the forward has been inconsistent in front of goal and was named as a substitute in Celtic's Co-operative Insurance Cup final victory over Rangers.

Ibrahim Afellay, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Khalid Boulahrouz and goalkeeper Michel Vorm all return to the Netherlands squad having missed last month's friendly against Tunisia.

Scotland travel to Amsterdam looking to close the five-point gap on van Marwijk's side.

Netherlands squad: Henk Timmer (Feyenoord), Maarten Stekelenburg (Ajax), Michel Vorm (FC Utrecht); Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord), Andre Ooijer (Blackburn), John Heitinga (Atletico Madrid), Khalid Boulahrouz (Stuttgart), Edson Braafheid (FC Twente), Dirk Marcellis (PSV Eindhoven), Joris Mathijsen (Hamburg), Gregory van der Wiel (Ajax); Mark van Bommel (Bayern Munich), Wesley Sneijder (Real Madrid), Ibrahim Afellay (PSV Eindhoven), Nigel de Jong (Manchester City), Demy de Zeeuw (AZ Alkmaar), Arjen Robben (Real Madrid), Rafael van der Vaart (Real Madrid), Stijn Schaars (AZ Alkmaar); Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Real Madrid), Dirk Kuyt, Ryan Babel (both Liverpool), Robin van Persie (Arsenal).
