Ballack backtracks over coach row

Michael Ballack is set to apologise to Joachim Low after he criticised the Germany coach in a newspaper article.

Ballack hit out at Low for dropping fellow midfielder Torsten Frings for this month's World Cup qualifiers.

"I will sit down with Joachim Low as soon as my injury permits and apologise for my behaviour," said the Chelsea midfielder, who has had foot surgery.

"I've noted Ballack's explanation, but much more important is our private discussion," Low said.

In the interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper earlier in October, Germany's captain Ballack said Low should show senior players more respect and loyalty.

He added: "If he (Frings) is no longer wanted, he should be told so honestly. Respect and loyalty is the least you can expect as a deserving national team player."

Ballack also said he had sympathy for Kevin Kuranyi, who walked out on the team during their 2-1 win over Russia on 11 October. Low has said he will never select Kuranyi again.

But in his statement Ballack offered a more conciliatory tone.

"I told Jogi Low that it was never my intention to criticise the work he is doing as national team coach," said Ballack. "I admire Jogi Low as a player and a professional very much."

Frings, who had threatened to quit the national team, has also promised to carry on playing for Germany.

The 32-year-old Ballack has won 89 caps, scoring 39 goals for Germany. In many of those games he has played alongside Frings, who has 78 caps appearances and 10 goals to his name.
