McFadden misses against Italy
McFadden misses chance against Italy at Hampden

Scotland 1-2 Italy

Utter heartbreak for Scotland as a tremendous effort to make it to the finals of Euro 2008 ended in crushing disappointment.

Luca Toni had put the world champions ahead after just two minutes at Hampden, before Barry Ferguson sent the Tartan Army into raptures with an equaliser on 65 minutes.

Italy won the match from a last-minute, hotly disputed free-kick converted by Christian Panucci.

But ten minutes before that killer blow, James McFadden, so often a hero in the dark blue of Scotland, missed a glaring chance to win the match.

The ball evaded everyone but the Everton striker, who slid in and hit the side net with the goal at his mercy.

Had he been a few inches further forward, he would have had the perfect angle to convert the chance.
