Nicol misses against Uruguay
Scotland 0-0 Uruguay
Back when Scotland competed in World Cup finals, on this occasion the 1986 tournament in Mexico, fans and players alike knew that scoring opportunities would be scarce.
Scotland would have to take their chances to progress from a group including Denmark, West Germany and Uruguay.
In a brutal match in the Estadio Neza, Nezahualcoyotl, Liverpool defender Stevie Nicol had a fabulous chance to silence the Uruguayans.
Big Roy Aitken sent over a cross from the right flank and Nicol, with the empty net gaping, side-footed the ball from close range with such a lack of belief and confidence that the Uruguayan keeper Alvez was able to recover his position and make the save.
Nicol's miss was very costly.
Uruguay qualified from the group with two draws. Scotland were eliminated, having been beaten by the Danes and the West Germans.
