First Scotland call for Iwelumo

Wolves striker Chris Iwelumo and Bristol City left-back Jamie McAllister have been named in the Scotland squad to face Norway on 11 October.

Keeper Allan McGregor retains his place for the World Cup qualifier at Hampden, despite being dropped by Rangers.

Ibrox defender Kirk Broadfoot is also kept on by manager George Burley after his impressive debut against Iceland.

Iwelumo, 30, has been capped at B level and has scored eight goals in seven matches this season.

He netted a hat-trick in his last appearance for Championship leaders Wolves, but was also sent off, earning himself a three-match ban.

Iwelumo, who began his career at St Mirren, will therefore not have played for three weeks by the time Scotland kick-off against Norway.

"You are looking for players in form, players who are playing regularly," said Burley. "Chris comes into that category, he has scored eight goals.

Burley looks to Scots players 'on-form'

"I saw a lot of him when he played for Colchester. This season, under Mick McCarthy, he has added being a target player and added goals."

Former Hearts and Aberdeen defender McAllister won his only cap in a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago more than four years ago.

"I know Jamie well from Hearts," the Scotland boss added. "When I was there, he was a midfield player but in the last couple of seasons he has settled in at left-back.

"He is a tremendous professional who was desperate to get into the squad."

Hibs striker Steven Fletcher and Motherwell forward David Clarkson are included but there is no place for Birmingham centre forward Garry O'Connor.

Hearts midfielder Michael Stewart and defenders Kevin McNaughton and Callum Davidson are also omitted, while Spurs full-back Alan Hutton is still sidelined by a foot problem.

Burley will have to name a new skipper for the Hampden clash, with Barry Ferguson injured and Stephen McManus suspended.

Rangers veteran David Weir is the obvious choice to replace McManus and partner Gary Caldwell at the heart of the Scotland defence and will be a candidate to lead the team.

"I saw Davie at Easter Road last week and he was outstanding," said Burley. "I have spoken to Davie, he is fresh and he is keen."

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher would appear to be the only other contender for the skipper's armband.

Scotland squad: Goalkeepers: Gordon (Sunderland), McGregor (Rangers), Marshall (Norwich)
