Iceland 1-2 Scotland

Broadfoot powered home a first half header for Scotland

Scotland's World Cup qualifying bid is back on track after a first win for manager George Burley.

Kirk Broadfoot, making his Scotland debut, crashed in a header from Barry Robson's corner after 18 minutes.

James McFadden and Robson both claimed the rebound after the striker's second half penalty kick had been saved.

Eidur Gudjohnsen slammed in a penalty after Scots skipper Stephen McManus had been sent off for handball, but the 10 men survived a late Iceland onslaught.

Although there were a few scares along the way, it was a much improved Scotland performance after Saturday's defeat by Macedonia.

At 2-0 the Scots were comfortable but the sending off meant that the visitors were hanging on grimly in the closing stages.

The game had not started promisingly either, with the Scots struggling to find any passing rhythm and surviving a flurry of attacks from the home side.

Aaron Gunnarsson shrugged off Scott Brown to play a neat one-two with Birkir Saevarsson and his strong, angled shot was parried away by Craig Gordon.

Heidar Helguson then headed wide from a good Gunnarson cross and Gudjohnsen blazed a volley over from 12 yards following some uncertain defending.

Despite Scotland winning a number of free kicks in promising positions, Kjartan Sturluson had not been troubled.

However, he was picking the ball out of the net when Broadfoot timed his run perfectly to nod home Robson's curling corner.

Iceland continued to look dangerous and as Gudjohnsen stole in between two Scotland defenders he was just inches away from connecting with Bjarni Olafur Eiriksson's delivery from deep.

Scotland showed more menace towards the end of the first half and it took a great sliding block in front of goal from Kristjan Orn Sigurdsson to prevent McFadden meeting Shaun Maloney's raking pass.

McFadden then steered a tantalising ball across the face of goal but there were no takers and Robson's opportunist strike was comfortably saved by Sturluson at his near post.

On the stroke of half-time, McManus reacted quickly to clear off the line and deny Hermann Hreidarsson from Helguson's headed knock-down, although Gordon looked well placed to save.

Scotland had to cope with a strong Iceland start after the interval but the visitors soon doubled their advantage.

Sigurdsson gifted the Scots a penalty on 59 minutes minutes when he crashed into McFadden.

The Birmingham striker's unconvincing spot-kick was saved by Sturluson but he responded swiftly to the loose ball and poked it into the net from close range, with Robson also charging in to make sure.

Iceland appeared to have run out of steam but were handed a lifeline when McManus handled a cross under pressure from Helguson.

The Scotland captain was shown a red card and Gudjohnsen smashed the ball home from the penalty spot to set up a nervous final 13 minutes.

There was a fright when a thunderous shot from Helguson cannoned off Gary Caldwell but Scotland managed to end Burley's four-game wait for a win.
