Norway 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Robbie Keane evades Norway's Tore Reginiussen

The Republic of Ireland remain unbeaten under new manager Giovanni Trapattoni after a 1-1 draw against Norway in a friendly match in Oslo on Wednesday.

Norway had the better of the early chances but then Robbie Keane, Damien Duff and Aiden McGeady all went close.

Keane scored on 44 minutes when he ran onto a through ball, cut inside a defender and slotted home a left-foot shot under Rune Almenning Jarstein.

Tore Reginiussen equalised on 61 minutes after poor Republic defending.

The first chance of the game fell to Norwegian striker Mohammed Abdellaoue who rounded Richard Dunne but then ballooned his shot over the bar.

Shay Given comfortably dealt with John Arne Riise's left-foot shot on 22 minutes and a minute later, the Newcastle goalkeeper saved well from Abdellaoue after a mistake by John O'Shea, Dunne then clearing the danger.

On the half-hour, Keane turned in the box and unleashed a rasping left-foot drive, which was pushed out by Jarstein, but no Republic player was close enough to follow up.

Duff's deflected shot was then tipped over by Jarstein and, soon after, McGeady fired just wide of the post.

Keane gave his side the lead with his 34th international goal a minute before the interval as heavy rain made conditions difficult.

Reginiussen levelled by slotting into the empty net after substitute goalkeeper Dean Kiely failed to collect a Martin Andresen free-kick and the ball rebounded off the head of Kevin Kilbane into the path of the goalscorer.

A saturated pitch made flowing football impossible for the rest of the second half and goalscoring chances were at a premium although Riise saw an 89th-minute effort deflected wide.
