Capello targets World Cup final

Coach Fabio Capello says he is ready to become the first manager to lead England to a World Cup final since Sir Alf Ramsey in 1966.

Since then the closest England have come to a World Cup final was in 1990 when Sir Bobby Robson's side lost to West Germany on penalties in the semis.

Capello said: "I think I can take England further than Bobby Robson in 1990, why not?

"We need to be ambitious," Capello told the Football Association's website.

"I have always worked to arrive at the top," added England's Italian coach, ahead of England's two friendlies against the United States and Trinidad and Tobago.

"I have been with Roma, Juventus, Milan, Real Madrid and always wanted to go to the very top. I don't understand why people feel differently."

Capello has been in charge of the England team for just two games, beating Switzerland at Wembley 2-1 and losing 1-0 to France in Paris.

Capello has three more friendlies - the games against the USA and Trinidad and a match against the Czech Republic in August - to assess the players at his disposal before the start of England's 2010 World Cup qualification campaign.

We have good material here and have been competitive against every team

"We have good material here and have been competitive against every team," he said.

"My ambition is to arrive at the top. You have to work to change the mentality.

"I believe we can do that but the players must also believe. By September I will have the full picture."

Capello said he was also keen to replicate the success of Chelsea and Manchester United as two English sides reached the Champions League final for the first time.

"England had two teams in the Champions League Final and they are ambitious teams," said Capello. "You have to transmit the same ambitions in the England team.

"When a player puts on the England shirt you have to play with a certain kind of spirit and that is very important. I will play the first eleven who I think are the best players at the moment."
