Graeme Souness appears to have ruled himself out as a candidate for the vacant Republic of Ireland job.
Souness has also been linked with the vacant Scotland job
Souness is reported to have declined to meet the Football Association of Ireland's selection committee which has been asked to find a new manager.
The Scot, who has also been linked with the vacant Scotland job, did not make clear his reasons for not meeting Ray Houghton, Don Givens and Don Howe.
"It is a huge pity," Souness told the Irish Star Sunday.
The FAI moved quickly to rubbish a radio report on Saturday that bookies favourite Terry Venables had already been offered the job.
"The panel, which was set up to recruit the new senior team manager, is in the process of contacting potential candidates to set up interviews and it is completely erroneous to suggest that somebody has been offered the position," said an FAI spokesman.
