Abject England fail to qualify

From the moment Scott Carson allowed Nico Kranjcar's 30-yard dipping shot to escape his grasp in the eighth minute, the writing was on the wall for Steve McClaren.

Eduardo then played in Ivica Olic to put Croatia 2-0 up inside 15 minutes and England's hopes were floundering in the Wembley mud.

Frank Lampard's penalty and Peter Crouch's wonderful goal pulled England level and Euro 2008 qualification was back on, but Mladen Petric delivered a 25-yard hammer blow.

McClaren pays for the failure to qualify with his job and the search begins for England's next manager.
