England's Euro 2008 campaign
Steve McClaren hands John Terry the England captaincy in August 2006
England's 2006 World Cup campaign ended in quarter-final defeat and tears for skipper David Beckham, as coach Sven-Goran Eriksson departed after five-and-a-half years in charge.

When Steve McClaren took over on 1 August his first decision was to axe Beckham - who had given up the captaincy after the World Cup - from the England squad.

McClaren picked Chelsea centre-half John Terry to be the new captain, preferring him to Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard.

England thumped Euro 2004 winners Greece 4-0 in a friendly in McClaren's bow as boss and the new era was under way.
