BBC pundits on England

When a big tournament looms, the most important thing is the position that you finish in come the end of the qualifiers.

We can criticise as much as we like but it won't alter the fact that England won 3-0.

In the second half the pace of the game was better and the passing was quicker.

There was more earlier forward passing and I think that was typified by Steven Gerrard's second goal.

I thought Gerrard's second goal would have been an extremely good goal against anyone.

I think he should be given credit. In my opinion he has been England's best player in both qualifiers against Israel and Andorra.

Wayne Rooney is suspended for the next game after picking up a booking.

He has got this temperament. It's been described that he lives and plays on the edge.

I have to say I didn't think he played particularly well and I don't think he has played in either of the two games like the great player he is.

In one respect, it may be in the lad's interest to have a break from football in the summer because he has been playing all of the time.

Overall, I was hoping that it was going to be three or four nil and I'm very pleased the way it finished.

The points are in the bag - and people will say so it should be.

I hope - I don't think it will - that it just eases things a little bit because we don't do anybody any good with all this blood curdling that has been going on. I don't think it helps.

The confidence was shattered. You could tell that in the first half.

You were looking at players who you have seen perform week-in, week-out in the highest level in the Premiership, Champions League and other top games and they looked scared stiff.

You are wanting players to want the ball and move for it and the lack of that was the biggest factor in the first half.

When Steven Gerrard scored the first goal you just saw a huge weight come off the players' shoulders.

You need your big players and Gerrard was there. It was no coincidence for me that it was in the middle.

I was critical on Saturday that we didn't get enough bodies into the box. We did against Andorra but the service was so poor. It's so frustrating for strikers and midfielders running into the area.
