Robinho hat-trick revives Brazil

All the latest news from the Copa America in Venezuela.

GROUP B: BRAZIL 3-0 CHILE

Robinho scored a hat-trick as defending champions Brazil bounced back from an opening defeat by Mexico to beat Chile 3-0 in the Copa America on Sunday.

The Real Madrid striker converted a controversial penalty amid furious Chile protests in the 36th minute and added two more in the last 10 minutes.

The opener arrived when Gilberto's cross from the left was comfortably held by goalkeeper Claudio Bravo but the referee gave a penalty, apparently for pushing.

Robinho calmly scored with a low shot which just eluded Bravo's outstretched hand.

Chile came out fighting after half-time and striker Humberto Suazo was close from a free-kick, while Suazo delayed his shot after being put clean through, allowing Brazil to clear.

Jorge Valdivia wasted another chance from close range before Robinho sealed victory in the 84th minute when he latched onto Vagner Love's pass and chipped over Bravo.

Three minutes later, he collected the ball 40 metres from goal, dribbled past two defenders and scored with a shot into the corner.

The result leaves both teams with three points from two games in Group B.

Brazil coach Dunga:
"The game was difficult because Chile defended a lot, but at the end we were able to secure the triumph.

"We played competitive football. It was a tough game, they played with two lines of four and we didn't have any space until they came out in the second half."

Chile coach Nelson Acosta:
"We played a good game but we lost Miguel Riffo and Rodrigo Melendez to injury and that forced us to use two substitutions.

"Brazil scored at the end of the match when our defence was completely open. It's very easy to score when your opponents are tired and chasing the game."

GROUP B: MEXICO 2-1 ECUADOR

Mexico have made it through to the quarter-finals after victory over Ecuador put them three points clear at the top of the their group, having earned a maximum six points from their two matches.

Hugo Sanchez's Mexico went ahead in the 22nd minute when Rafeal Marquez broke through from midfield, slipped a precise pass through the centre of the Ecuadorian defence and Nery Castillo slotted home.

And they almost went in at the break with a two-goal lead but Hurtado cleared a Fernando Arce shot off the line.

But in the 80th minute, Cuauhtemoc Blanco floated over a superb cross from the right wing and Omar Bravo bulleted home a diving header to kill the game off.

Edison Mendez pulled a goal back for Ecuador five minutes from the end, but it proved scant consolation.

Mexico coach Hugo Sanchez:
"We dream about winning the Copa, but we need to take things slowly - qualifying for the quarter-finals was just the first step.

"Just because we beat Brazil we shouldn't be considered the tournament favourites."

Ecuador coach Luis Fernando Suarez:
"Yes, it's a failure and I'm not thinking of resigning for the moment."
