The venue for the 2012 Uefa European Championship will be announced in Cardiff next year.
Uefa's executive body will reveal the winning bid on 18 April after the three candidates have made their final presentations in the Welsh capital.
Italy are up against joint bids from Croatia/Hungary and Poland/Ukraine.
"This is the first time Wales will have hosted such a massive event," said Football Association of Wales secretary general David Collins.
"A lot of work with have to be done between now and then to ensure the whole thing is a success."
The announcement at Cardiff's City Hall will end a four-day meeting of the top brass of European's football governing body.
