Taylor hopes to get finals chance
England Under-21 coach Peter Taylor
Taylor is in his second spell as Under-21 manager
Peter Taylor hopes to remain England Under-21 manager for next year's European Championship finals if his side can hold off Germany to qualify.

Taylor's youngsters hold a 1-0 lead ahead of the second leg of their play-off in Leverkusen on Tuesday.

England boss Steve McClaren is looking to replace Taylor, who is also Crystal Palace manager, with a full-time coach.

But Taylor said: "If we get there then I have been involved in the campaign and I would like to finish if off."

The former Leicester and Hull boss has been given the go-ahead to continue in both roles by Palace chairman Simon Jordan and admits it would be frustrating to have to walk away if England do make it to the finals in Holland.

Peter Taylor's record at this level speaks for itself, and the lads have a lot of respect for him

Taylor added: "Of course I would love to take them.

"But on the other side of it, Steve has his plans and I understand it."

England saw off Germany at the Ricoh arena on Friday night in the first leg thanks to Leighton Baines' superb long-range strike.

Baines says the players all want Taylor to stay, explaining: "He's got to take a massive amount of credit, all the lads really enjoy working with him.

"His record at this level speaks for itself, and the lads have a lot of respect for him.

"We'd all love Peter to stay but he has commitments with his club. We'd love him to stay but we'll respect whatever he does."
