Toshack ponders Giggs compromise
Toshack may limit Ryan Giggs' involvement against Bulgaria
Toshack may limit Ryan Giggs' involvement against Bulgaria
Wales boss John Toshack will take into account Manchester United's problems before deciding on Ryan Giggs' role in next week's friendly with Bulgaria.

Toshack wants his captain involved at Swansea's Liberty Stadium on 15 August, but Giggs may not play a full part.

United have Michael Carrick injured, with suspensions hanging over Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney.

"Those problems are a concern. It is not about club versus country, it is about being sensible," Toshack said.

"Maybe a friendly with Bulgaria four days before the season starts for Ryan, when it looks like United will be without Michael Carrick, could be a problem for us.

"Ryan has played in eight of the 12 games for me, two friendlies and in six competitive games.

"We understand the situation, it is not about having players pulled out, we will look at what is in the best interests of all of us.

"I would expect Ryan to be with us, since he has been captain he has been excellent. His presence and performances - he has scored four in his last four games - has been very positive for us.

"His attitude and everything about him has been really first class. But it is a very delicate time of the season.

"I know what it is like for managers, you want players to avoid injuries just before the season starts.

"I am also a little concerned about the problem with Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes and whether they will start the season."

New signing Carrick was injured in the friendly against Ajax on Saturday, while Scholes and Wayne Rooney were sent off against Porto on Friday in the pre-season Amsterdam Tournament.

The English FA is expected to get a report from its Dutch counterpart on Tuesday, which could recommend bans for both players and leave United struggling for the Premiership kick-off on 20 August.

One bright point from United's trip to Holland was the form of Giggs.

The 32-year-old slotted into centre midfield to such effect that Toshack has compared Giggs to Real Madrid legend Alfredo di Stefano.

"Ryan looks in great form and is strolling about like he is Di Stefano, telling everyone what to do and he scored a fine goal in Amsterdam," Toshack added.
