England player ratings

Marks out of 10 for England after their international friendly against Holland.

England

Paul Robinson - 6: Looked safe enough when needed and the one time he was beaten the post came to his rescue.

Gary Neville - 6: A quiet game for the experienced head at the back. He created one of England's better chances with a driven cross early on.

Jamie Carragher - 7 (STAR MAN): Again proved himself a more than able deputy in defence and was the best of an ordinary bunch.

Wes Brown - 6: Not really tested but looked solid enough against poor opposition to warrant another look.

Ashley Cole - 6: Had his hands full with the lively Castelen, who gave him a stern test of his defensive skills.

David Beckham - 6: His first-half display was an improvement on recent England performances but he seemed to fade after the break.

Frank Lampard - 6: Not quite his usual influence but passing was tidy enough before going off at half-time.

Steven Gerrard - 7: Popped up just about everywhere in midfield with his usual energy and probing passes.

Shaun Wright-Phillips - 5: Missed two glorious chances in a nervous opening 20 minutes and at times looked too eager to impress.

Wayne Rooney - 6: Thankfully kept his temper in check this time and showed the better side of his game with some penetrating runs and neat touches.

Michael Owen - 6: Found himself a bit isolated up front. Volleyed over in the first half but other than that he had few chances to shine.

Substitutes

Owen Hargreaves (replaced Lampard, 46 mins) - 6: Something of a surprise that he was first off the bench. Showed plenty of energy but not much else.

Andy Johnson (replaced Rooney, 61 mins) - 6: Given little chance to impress as he was stuck out in an unfamiliar role on the right wing.

Stewart Downing (Replaced Wright-Phillips, 61 mins) - 6: A rarity to see a left-footed player on the left wing. Needs more time to prove if he is the answer.

Kieron Dyer (replaced Beckham, 82 mins) - 6: Appears a key squad member but the game was effectively over when he entered the field.

Jermaine Jenas (replaced Gerrard, 82 mins) - 6: Arrived at the same time as his Newcastle team-mate but with little or no chance to shine.
