McQueen calls for Vogts to resign

Fletcher urges caution

Former Scotland international Gordon McQueen has again called for Berti Vogts to resign or be sacked.

McQueen says he is staggered by the depths to which Scotland have fallen under Vogts and believes the players have lost confidence in the German.

Captain Barry Ferguson said after the defeat by Norway that the squad was still behind the manager.

But McQueen told BBC Scotland: "I think if we do or we don't get a result on Wednesday it is time for him to go."

McQueen, whose thoughts were echoed after Saturday's 1-0 defeat by several analysts, including his fellow former internationalists Willie Miller and Charlie Nicholas, admitted Vogts had little to work with.

"First and foremost, I don't think there is any doubt at all that it is probably the weakest bunch of players that any Scotland manager has had ever," he added.

"We have that problem and Lawrie Sanchez has that problem at Northern Ireland. You just wonder where have all the players gone.

"But at the same time I don't believe they are getting the right guidance from the manager.

"It is most certainly time for change. I think the manager's PR is absolutely dreadful and some of the selections in the past have been a bit of a mystery.

"I have lost confidence in him, certainly the Scottish media have and have done for some time, and I honestly think the Tartan Army have lost confidence in him.

"I'm worried now that the players possibly have as well.

"He has always said to be judged on competitive results and we were prepared to put up with the absolute dross that was getting served up in some of the friendlies over the last couple of years.

"This is a results business. He is not producing results and there is absolutely no doubt that it is time for change."

But Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher insisted that the players should take a greater share of the blame.

"The players are all fully behind Berti," he said.

"He is the one taking all the stick, but it is the players who go out on the park and we have to take responsibility.

"Obviously we are all disappointed for ourselves, but we are hurting more for Berti because he will take the brunt of the criticism. I think it is unfair on him because no-one can say they would have picked a different team."
