Orient's Paul-Jose M'Poku celebrates after his cross leads to a Swansea own goal
Orient's Paul-Jose M'Poku celebrates his cross leading to a Swans own goal

An extraordinary own goal from Swansea City captain Alan Tate gifted Leyton Orient an FA Cup fourth-round victory.

Jimmy Smith gave Orient the lead, heading past Yves Ma-Kalambay as the goalkeeper flapped at a free-kick.

Swansea equalised moments before half-time when Darren Pratley's chip picked out Cedric van der Gun to flick home.

Orient hung on thanks to keeper Jamie Jones and a replay seemed imminent, but two minutes from time Tate swung at a cross and sliced into his own net.

Swansea threatened inside the fifth minute when Scott Sinclair was given the time and space to strike a 12-yard shot goalwards, but Orient goalkeeper Jones made a fine save to turn the ball round a post.

Moments later the Swans broke forward again and Kemy Agustien hit a 25-yard shot which drew a fine block from Ben Chorley.

From the resultant corner, an in-swinging delivery from Andrea Orlandi was greeted with a firm header by Van der Gun from 12 yards which flew over the crossbar.

The Championship promotion-chasers were largely dominant during the opening 45 minutes and Agustien hit a 25-yard shot which was blocked by Orient defender Terrell Forbes, before Sinclair went close again.

But the visitors from League One opened the scoring against the run of play 10 minutes before the break.

Joe Allen fouled Smith and Charlie Daniels swung in a free-kick from the right flank.

Ma-Kalambay bounded off his line but failed to make contact with the ball as Smith arrived on cue to plant a firm header into the net from 12 yards and hand Orient a shock lead.

Swansea responded in style and a spirited rally saw them level on the stroke of half-time.

Pratley cut inside and spotted Van der Gun coming in off his wing on the right flank, dinking a cross into the path of the onrushing Dutchman to head home from six yards out.

Swansea could even have taken the lead moments later but Pratley was flagged off-side as he forced home Sinclair's cross-shot.

Orient boss Slade made a tactical switch at half-time, replacing Scott McGleish with Jonathan Tehoue, but Swansea came close to forging ahead shortly after the restart.

Van der Gun fired goalwards from 12 yards but Jones made a fine save to tip the ball over the bar.

Moments later, Pratley took an inswinging corner and Sinclair was given the time and space to strike the ball narrowly wide from 20 yards.

Orlandi, playing in an attacking left-back role, had a shot blocked by Smith before he succumbed to injury in the 63rd minute and was replaced by Angel Rangel.

Rangel looked to make his mark immediately and fired just wide from 20 yards before Van der Gun missed the target from 12 yards.

Orient rode the spell of pressure and began to threaten in the closing stages.

With two minutes remaining, Paul-Jose M'Poku got to the right byline to skim in a dangerous low cross.

Tate instinctively swung his left foot at the ball but only succeeded in diverting it past a startled Ma-Kalambay and inadvertently sending Orient into the fifth round.
