Burnley   3 - 1   Burton Albion

Burnley forward Chris Eagles
Eagles struck the opener with a right-foot strike into the bottom corner

Chris Eagles scored twice as Burnley sealed their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup by seeing off the challenge of dogged Burton Albion.

Scott Malone struck the woodwork for the visitors with a superb free-kick.

Eagles put Burnley ahead after Jack Cork's sublime back-heel and struck from close range after the break.

Eagles later hit the post before Calvin Zola pulled a goal back with a deft finish but Martin Paterson bundled the ball home to settle the tie late on.

Saturday's contest was the first match at Turf Moor since the Clarets appointed Eddie Howe as manager on 16 January, on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

And the 33-year-old former Bournemouth boss can look forward to Sunday's fifth-round draw after his team saw off League Two opposition.

606: DEBATE

Burton had defeated another Championship side in Middlesbrough to reach the fourth round of the competition for the first time - and the Brewers gave it a real go at Turf Moor.

Shaun Harrad, who scored both goals against Boro, has since left for Northampton but the experienced Zola has arrived from Crewe and was heavily involved.

Brewers boss Paul Peschisolido saw his team attempt to take the game to their opponents in the opening stages and Zola started a swift attack after Mike Duffy had been caught in possession.

The ball found its way to Aaron Webster, whose shot was blocked, while Jacques Maghoma later saw an effort comfortably saved by Clarets goalkeeper Lee Grant.

Eagles, clearly the stand-out player in the contest, had crossed for Jay Rodriguez to head wide before the former Manchester United player opened the scoring.

Thompson went close before the break and visiting keeper Adam Legzdins denied substitute Ross Wallace before Eagles scored his second.

He tapped home from close range after Wallace's cross eventually found its way to the goalscorer via fellow substitute Chris Iwelumo.

Eagles went close to a hat-trick with a strike from 18 yards that struck the underside of the crossbar but was ruled to have not crossed the line.

Wallace then failed to tuck home from six yards after Martin Paterson's cut-back before Zola scored on his debut, flicking the ball past Grant from Malone's cross.

The goal prompted hopes of a Burton comeback but substitute Paterson scored in the final minutes after Legzdins failed to hold a cross from Wallace.

Burnley manager Eddie Howe:

"Chris Eagles is the type of player you can build a team around.

"There has been talk of teams coming in for him but we definitely want to keep hold of all our better players and he is amongst that group.

"It was a tough game for us. We knew Burton would make it difficult and it turned out that way.

"The third goal eased the nerves a little, though, and after that we saw the game out well."

Burton manager Paul Peschisolido:

"I thought the scoreline flattered Burnley. We had them on the back foot a few times in the first half, and then at the end it looked as though we might push on after Calvin had scored our goal.

"We have come up against an excellent Championship side, but we've matched them in certain aspects.

"The boys were superb, but it's about not letting our standards drop now."
